So skinny he might blow away

Dex is at that age where no matter how much he eats, he remains a bone rack. I remember when Briggs was this age ... I still fed kibble back then, and I used to just leave the bag open for him to nibble out of whenever he wanted. But only time will pack some mass on this puppy!

  1. Ugh! My doberman just got done going through this stage! I was so embarrassed to have her meet people! I'm so glad we've left that stage far behind now.

  2. I remember when my Charlie was like that, about a year ago, just before he turned 2. I had to start feeding him puppy food again, mixed with home cooking, to put the weight on and keep it there. Before that I took him to the Vet to ask what was wrong with him!!

  3. Haha, Kota's just passed that stage (1 year old on Monday! Where has the time gone?) but for a while it looked like I was starving him. Annoyingly enough the 2 sisters I saw regularly were both really stocky so it really did look like it was my fault!

He's putting weight on again now though. 16.5 kilos and counting!

    Love to Dex.

  6. My youngest Border Collie, who turns 3, is on a raw diet and still hasn't left that stage... Even though I regularly feed her fat meat like lamb and goat and she gets portions as huge as she can eat them during one meal, people often tell me off for starving her. You could play the piano on her ribs and spine.
Good luck with feeding Dexter up. ;-)

  7. I could not put weight on Nano with raw. And I tried. I finally switched him to a hydrolyzed diet because of allergies and not only did the itching go down, but he finally put on that last pound. (My dogs are VERY lean, leaner than Sheena's, and he was TOO thin.) He was getting duck, very fat, and lots of it... no dice. For now, the hyrdolyzed will have to do. Fortunately, he has no discernment whatsoever and will work very hard for his totally denatured foodlike puffs.

  10. He weighs 36lbs as of yesterday, so he hasn't gained much in the last couple of months. He keeps getting taller though!!

  12. I'm enjoying Solo's rough coat which keeps the ribs hidden somewhat. My two smoothies looked like coyotes for awhile.

  13. Beware the big, bad wolf! Great photo!

I'd much rather my dogs be on the too thin side, than on the side where every bite of food must be monitored to keep the weight off. I have one of each, and the thin guy is much easier to deal with!
