Do you ear what I ear?

I was pretty sure that Dexter's ears were going to end up 3/4 tipped, standing up on the bottom and flopping over at the tips. His siblings who went uppy-eared did it a long time ago. But for the last day or so, the left ear has decided it need to stand tall and proud. And so we have a new ear set.

He is in the middle of teething (he has way too many canine teeth in his mouth at the moment) so it's possible the ear will come back down again. It's also possible the other one will go up, or they may stay this way (eek!).

Sometimes they both stand up. They are simply too large to do this! I want every one of you to go home and write "Tips Down, Dex" 50 times please!

  1. hehehe. Love it! Crazy ears are the best!
When Darwin was teething her ears were CRAZY! Almost like Dexter's but I'd say crazier! I was worried they were going to stay like that too but they finally (both) settled down.

  2. Their ears get crazy when they are teething? I had no idea. Why is that?

I love that last picture. Two huge ears, and a huge toothy grin. What a clown that puppy of yours is.

  3. Those are some crazy ears. Half Pint has down ears, and looks like a mad scientist with all her fur sticking out...sometimes I'll manually turn them into uppy ears, and laugh at her expression. :D

  5. Nikki's ears are up, but the top 3/4 inch of the right leans back and the top 3/4 inch of the left leans forward. When she is begging, they both lay all the way back (the NO ears look)!

  8. One up one down is VERY COOL! Just ask my Pete! Greta knows too! :) It's like the best of both worlds.

  11. I loooooove the uppie ears. I can make German Shepherd jokes about him now. Awesome.

And Pete is still totally handsome with his uneven ears.

  12. LOL! He looks like a giant bat with them up. Very grown-up, too.

  13. You are worrying about his ears - which are adorable - and meanwhile look at the size of him! If he keeps growing at this rate he will be huge! What does he weigh these days? I know legs don't weigh a lot.

  14. folding the tips forward over chewing gum will hold them down till he is through teething.
    he is completely adorable!

  15. Is it just me or are his ears too big for his head? Not that he isn't adorable either way...

  16. I loooooove one up-one down Dex, that is just way too adorable for words!

Don't people temporarily tape a coin to ears to convince them to fold over? I guess you could do that. But I'd LOVE for my future dog to have awesome 1-up-1-down ears :-)

  17. Ya'll are so funny!!

I don't mind admitting that I prefer ear symmetry over this craziness his ears are currently involved with, but there's no way I'd tape or glue anything on my boy. He will end up with whatever ears doG granted him and I'll love him still. Nevertheless, I'd prefer that standy-uppy thing flopped over again ;-)

  18. Solo is still both down today-three days now after weeks of being one up one down. The agony. I have two standy up eared dogs, so a tipped ear would be nice-but I don't care to the point that I would do anything to alter their naturally given trajectory.

I wish I could understand why teething makes them go wonky-the only explanation I've been given is "it just does". Ok, but WHY does it?

Solo still has the annoying three long white wild hairs on his mask....aaaaaaaagh. I will not pluck I will not pluck.

  19. One of my dogs has large ears, each of which is the size of her whole head. I love big-eared dogs. I love it when excitement makes the ginormous ears stand up and my dog looks like The Flying Nun. Heheheh.

  20. That first picture is just swoonful. He's working on his manly Border Collie mind meld stare.

  21. I wish my puppy's ears would go one up one down(that's what he had when I first got him) but they are showing signs of uppy ear permanence. Just to be perverse, I'm gonna start chanting "Tips up, Dex!" because I love enormous ears.

  24. Don't hold your breath for stability yet! My pup is 9 months and his ears still change on a near-daily basis.
